Researchers’ pay

It pays to come to Flanders!

The combination of high pay and relatively inexpensive
living costs makes Flanders a great place to be.

Academic staff

The Flemish government sets salary scales for
self-employed staff and academic assistants, but
universities have the freedom to award staff pay
appropriate to their experience, qualifications and so forth.

The pay scales for academic staff serve as a benchmark for
other researchers.

Researchers in companies

Salaries in the private sector are based on pay scales set by
the joint committee responsible for the respective sector. These joint
committees comprise employer and employee representatives and are
chaired by a civil servant from the Ministry of Employment.

Key facts: Flanders and Belgium do very well in an international comparison:

  • Within Europe we generally rank highly in terms of researchers’ pay, coming in the top five.
  • In the private and government sectors we are top.
  • Self-employed academic staff in the higher education sector earn as much as in neighbouring countries.

Gross and net pay

Earning a high salary is great, but healthcare, social security contributions and other overheads can cause a major discrepancy between your gross and net pay.

Here you can calculate how much you will end up with at the end of the month.

“Here, the net amount you end up with may seem like a relatively small proportion of what you actually earn, but you benefit in many other ways. For example, here I know that if I have to go to hospital for something small, I am likely to have my treatment fully reimbursed.”
