Tip
Dutch is Flemish people’s mother tongue, a Germanic
language closely related to English and German.
Most people find Dutch surprisingly quick and easy to
learn.
But many Flemish people can also speak English, French
or German, the latter two being official languages of
Belgium alongside Dutch.
This is due to Belgium’s multilingualism and Flanders’
decidedly international outlook. Indeed, Flemish people,
like all Belgians, respect and value practical language skills.
Even though you will be able to communicate with many Flemish people in a number of languages, taking a Dutch course definitely makes sense, because it will help you integrate into your research group, make Flemish friends and enjoy life in Flanders to the full.
“One big advantage for newcomers here in Flanders is that everybody can speak English.”
"Administrative staff can speak English as well, so you don't feel too bad about not speaking any Dutch when you arrive."
