A 2006 Eurobarometer study entitled Europeans and their
Languages showed that 68% of Belgian respondents
deemed it “very useful” to know languages other than
their mother tongue.
This placed Belgium way above the EU-25 average of
53%. In addition, 45% of Belgians cited “personal
satisfaction” as their main reason for learning other
languages.
Half the Flemish respondents said they spoke very good
English, the language described in the Eurobarometer
study as “by far the most useful” one to know.
Here are the percentages of Flemish people with a good to
very good grasp of German, English and French:

“Many foreigners coming here think they will always have to speak Dutch or French and have no idea that they can also get by with English. The multilingual environment and widespread acceptance of English is important when dealing with your bank, garage or wherever. Here, it’s simply not a problem. People speak good English.”
