A fair, reliable, solidarity-based system
Flanders, indeed Belgium as a whole, has highly
developed and efficient social services. A proportion
of the gross salary of all employees in Belgium goes
towards financing the national social security system.
Employees’ contributions are automatically deducted
by their employer.
In return, anyone facing difficulties such as unem-
ployment or illness is guaranteed a fixed income and
a comprehensive range of social services.
For researchers, mandatory social security contributions and the
kind of cover to which they are entitled will depend on their status
and country of origin.
Full cover includes healthcare, incapacity for work (illness, maternity/paternity
leave, accidents at work and occupational diseases), pensions and
unemployment. Partial cover excludes pension payments and
unemployment benefit.
