Flanders, a land of opportunity!

Flanders is full of job opportunities for people like you,
whether you are a researcher or the partner of a
researcher. Well-educated people like you will find low
unemployment, high job satisfaction and plenty of
training opportunities on the Flemish labour market.

Many multinationals based in Flanders and/or Brussels
need people with your experience and language skills.

Flemish isn’t double Dutch!

Are you frightened of facing a language barrier here in
Flanders? Well, don’t be! You’ll be pleasantly surprised how
easy the language is. And there are countless
language-learning opportunities. Are you concerned that not
knowing Dutch right from the start might hinder your or your
partner’s chances of employment? There’s no need to worry.
Being multilingual themselves, Flemish people are very understanding,
and you’re bound to pick up Dutch pretty quickly.

Key facts:

  • Belgium has a low level of unemployment. In 2011, the figure was just 7.2%, one of the lowest anywhere in the European Union.
  • Among the highly skilled, the level of unemployment is even lower: just 3.4%, compared with a European average of 5%.
  • The difference between male and female unemployment is among the smallest in Europe.
  • Belgian employees enjoy the second highest level of job satisfaction in Europe.
  • Belgium is one of Europe's top three countries for on-the-job vocational training.
  • Many employers reimburse all or part of their staff's public transport costs.
  • The median net income may not be among the highest in Europe, but the heavily subsidised system of benefits and social services more than compensate for this.
