Pictures KBBE site visit - September 13
On 13 September a site visit was organised to Ghent, highlighting two different aspects of the Bio-Economy:
1. Biofuels Refinery Complex at the Rodenhuize Docks - one of the largest biofuel production sites in Europe and the Bio Base Europe pilot plant.
2. Life Sciences cluster at Ghent Technology Park with Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) and its incubators and spin-off's, selected visits to green and red biotech companies.

The KBBE conference walking dinner was organised in the Royal Flemish Academy for Belgium for Science and the Arts.
Dirk Van Melkebeke, Secretary General of the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation (Flemish Government) and Rudolf Strohmeier, Deputy Director of General Research (European Commission) welcomed the audience and introduced the speakers.

Pictures KBBE Conference - September 14
The Knowledge Based Bio-Economy towards 2020 conference took place in Brussels, in the Square Meeting centre. The conference was organised by the Flemish Department of Economy, Science and Innovation in close collaboration with the European Commission.
The conference gathered academic research experts, economists, industry, policy makers and non-governmental organisations to discuss a new European vision and action plan for the KBBE towards 2020.
